What do you want from the iTech Lab?
Dec 10 2007, 12:48 AM EST | Post edited: Dec 10 2007, 12:48 AM EST
As this is the first semester of Sierra College's iTech Lab, we'd like to hear from you about what you'd like to see offered through the iTech trainings. What do you need? Do you find this valuable?

I would like to learn some ways to enhance the online portion of my class without freaking out the less techno savvy students and that won't bog down the dial-up connection of others. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I would like to learn how to make a video of something I do repetitively (like give a basic library research and resources orientation) and then post it on a Sierra College web page as streaming video, and to have it available for online instructors to add to their BlackBoard pages. I can see this type of application being of use to other departments also - counseling, outreach, etc.

Patricia, I'd like to know if you think you could create an audio or enhance audio (which means audio with still images) file to convey your topic. If so, this could be converted into an LRC podcast! We're getting started this semester with Sierra College's iTunes U site. Podcasts will be available to anyone who is interested enough to watch/listen to them. Let me know what you think. -Michelle Do you find this valuable?

I encourage you to think about ways to supplement your current content with the same content but offered in multimedia format. For example, perhaps you can have a lecture posted as a word document but also offer the same lecture in an audio file so students have the option to read or listen. Options are great for students. I'm offering my lectures this way and I have found that, on average, 40% of my students choose to read AND listen to each lecture because it supports their learning style. What do you think?

It makes a lot of sense. I just need to get over my self-consciousness. I am very uncomfortable seeing or hearing myself in any media. But what am I talking about - I said in my first post that I am willing to embarrass myself !..... :0) Do you find this valuable?

It's amazing how many teachers feel the same way you do. Just remember you're doing it for your students and they hear and see you all the time so it's no big deal to them! After the first recording you'll get great feedback from your students and then you'll feel the learning potential which will get you over feeling embarassed. Good for you for being here, in this wiki, and taking a risk by make a post. And, by the way, do you know that your post was OUR FIRST post? You're more of a trailblazer than you know!

I'm ready to take it up a notch, for sure. I want to have the best one unit hybrid tutor training class in the world. I want it relevant, practical, funny and engaging. Do you find this valuable?

I have looked at Voice Thread and think that it is pretty neat. I don't know if a podcast is exactly the way to go, mostly because I don't know what is possible. I'm open to suggestions, and I hope to be able to take some iTech Friday classes next semester - John Michael Keating and I have been talking about doing that together. Are your iTech classes available for flex credit? Do you find this valuable?

Hi Patricia,

I don't have the training scheduled developed yet for Fall but I do plan to offer more workshops on Fridays and earlier in the semester. I encourage you and John-Michael to consider the Audio Development workshop. It's 18-hours long (4 4-hour sessions plus 2 hours of homework). You have an option of earning one unit of lower division FERC or 18 hours of flex.

In addition, ALL of the iTech Lab workshops are eligible for flex credit.
